Different Glazes

Recommended Posts

I have two 1972 Republican elephant Frankhoma mugs and the glaze and thickness of the pottery are different on the two. Can anyone tell me why? One is a satin finish and one is a dull finish. Did Frankhoma sell seconds and could that be the reason?

Frankoma did sell seconds, but that may not be the issue.

1972 was Prairie Green glaze. Prairie Green was a rutile glaze and rutile glazes vary not only in color but in gloss depending on the thickness of the glaze applied at a given location. That's why you have some brown and some green on Prairie Green pieces - glaze thickness. I would guess that one simply has a thinner glaze than the other.
