Chili Cookoff: Austin

Austin expects to see fiery competition at the Dell Jewish Community Center in April as teams, families, and chili aficionados from all denominations attend Austin’s first annual Kosher Chili Cook-off. Chili chefs and their teams will offer their chili concoctions to celebrity judges John Kelso, Coach Darrell and Edith Royal, and Chancellor Mark Yudof, who will award trophies for the best in "Beef," "Specialty Turkey," "Specialty Veggie," and "People's Choice" chili dishes. There will also be an award for “Best Decorated Booth”.

Besides the cook-off and tastings, there will be music, drinks, beer, and loads of family entertainment. There will also be plenty of people for people watching.

The Kosher Chili Cook-off idea comes from Tiferet Israel in Dallas, who will be holding their 12th annual Kosher Chili Cook-off this year.

Event Details

Date: Sunday, April 10th

Time: 11:30 am – 3:00 pm

Location: Dell Jewish Community Campus, 7300 Hart Lane, Austin, Texas

Cost: Advance tickets - $4 for children 11 and under, $8 for adults

Day of event-$5 for children 11 and under, $10 for adults

Each children’s ticket will also buy them a hot dog.

Teams: Teams should consist of four people. Registration deadline is Wednesday, March 23rd. Congregation Agudas Achim will provide the Kosher meat and cooking utensils. Upon paying the registration and Kosher meat fees, all the teams have to do is show up with their Kosher spices and get cooking. Where applicable, teams will have the opportunity to distribute information about their organization.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit People's Community Clinic, a unique community asset. Founded in 1970 by a group of volunteer doctors and nurses, PCC has become Austin's largest comprehensive primary health care center serving the uninsured working poor. All services are offered on a sliding scale basis.
