When I grew up there we were thrilled to get an inch!

Mother Nature's ice surprise

Fort Worth Star-Telegram

By the time parents were rousing children Thursday morning, a slushy snow, ideal for snowmen and snowball fights, blanketed the ground.

North Texas children had already enjoyed a white Christmas, so a second snowfall just before Valentine's Day seemed like a special gift.

But the snow kept falling, much more than predicted and leading to the greatest calendar day snowfall total on record for Dallas-Fort Worth. The postcard-perfect scenes started to get scary.

By 9 p.m., 9.4 inches had fallen at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, and it was still coming down.

Thousands of people came home from work to power outages as tree branches laden with wet, heavy snow sagged onto power lines.
