Local German Fest
Offers Old-World Home Cooking
Cherished By Generations!
It’s that wonderful time of the year again to put on your Dirndl or Lederhosen and take part in a warm, family friendly tradition in Copperas Cove on Saturday, November 7th at the Annual German Sausagefest hosted by the Trinity Lutheran Church located on Highway 190.
Experience this annual German Fest and old-world home cooking that generations have cherished. Originally started in the late 1950’s as a Trinity Lutheran Sunday afternoon barbeque this annual event has evolved into an all Saturday German fest. Today the dinners are still the authentic German-style home cooking loved through the years. The feature of the event is the special German Sausage and “ SECRET RECIPE” perfected and improved by the Mickan family of Copperas Cove. Alfred “Papa” Mickan modified the original recipe brought to this country by his German grandfather in 1854. Alfred Mickan changed the recipe and achieved a mild sort of sausage that goes well with everything and that everyone seems to enjoy. The ingredients and the type of woods used to get that smoke house flavor are secrets of the Mickan family. The sausage is made from 100 percent fresh pork; even the casings used to stuff the sausage are pure pork. The meat is boned, ground and mixed according to the old recipe. Luckily, Papa Mickan’s recipe has been handed down to members of his family and it will continue to bring flavor and memory of the old country home to Copperas Cove.
This year, as always anticipated, the smoked sausage is served with a complete, Hausfrau approved, menu. Alles Willkommen, to feast on German sausage and enjoy other traditional favorites like German style potato salad, sauerkraut, home fries, green beans, brotchen and home–style desserts. Das ist gut! Along with German food there will be a feast for the senses with charming decorations and music from a live band that will add to the “Gemutlichkeit” theme of the day. Stroll through the “Country Store” filled with one-of-a-kind handcrafts, quilts, floral arrangements, canned and backed goods that are available for purchase. The price for a dinner is adults-$7.50 and children-$5.00. Also don’t forget to come early for the Sausagefest bulk sausage, which is a much-devoured favorite of discerning hunters of the area. Bulk sales start early and cost $5.50 a pound.
Bring the whole family to this yearly tradition of good old-fashioned home cooking and heart-warming fun Saturday, November 7, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Copperas Cove, 518 East Highway 190 at Morris Drive. For more information on the event call: (254) 547-2225.
